Together we will work on the fundamentals of the “mother” of the metal trades. By the end of the day you will have made a number of wrought iron hooks to take home and put to use in your home! I am adding the creation of a bottle opener near the end of the day, should time allow. This is all about the experience but the artifacts you create will be treasured I assure you!
All materials are included in the cost of the course.
All dates are tentative and subject to cancellation if there are not enough students to proceed.
A 50% deposit is required to get your spot, and prices are subject to taxes
pack a lunch
Safety:
Required: Steel toe shoes, heavy work clothes and a (optional) light cap.
Supplied: Safety Glasses, ear protection and Gloves
We will limit as much as possible the use of powered tools during the workshop but there may a need to employ more modern techniques, such as the band saw and the drill press.
Breakdown of course, hour by hour (remember, just an outline)
Hour 1
General Safety and shop layout with explanation of tools and blacksmith processes.
Hour 2
Cutting our material and getting it hot! Proper hammer technique and tapering.
Hour 3
Learning how to scroll the end of the rod
Hour 4
Tong handling, using a simple hook jig and more hammer and striking techniques.
Break for lunch (1 hour with study books ie: New Edge of the Anvil)
Hour 6 and 7
Forging, shaping, peening, hot cutting, filing and drilling
Hour 8
Finishing with scotch brite and waxing.
At anytime during the day I encourage my students to ask about any of the metalwork processes I have employed in my 40 years of work in the medium, from structural steel to jewellery production.
